Redbridge Museum,
Ilford

At the heart of this museum are genuine oral histories and a wealth of donated memorabilia from the diverse communities of the London Borough of Redbridge.

To ensure that the whole community benefits, the museum has a braille-enhanced ‘trail’ of tactile objects and a children’s trail that links brass-rubbing markers on key displays to a quiz sheet. As a result, the access advisor said Redbridge was “an illustration of how creatively and intelligently access can be designed in”.

Complementing the with low and hi-tech interactives, evocative smells and reconstructions, the curators and designers have created a real focus for local pride.
