‘British Rail:
A Moving Story’, National Railway Museum (NRM), York
Located in the Great Hall of the National Railway
Museum, this free-standing exhibition charts the history of British
Rail, from its creation as a nationalised organisation in 1948 to its
privatisation in 1993.
The space is defined by four full-size BR locomotives:
one steam, one electric, one diesel and one hi-speed. Dedicated interpretation
units carry an explanation of their place in the history of British
Rail. In-between, a gently curving steel structure carries richly coloured
graphic panels, integrated object casework, lighting, interactives and
oral history units to tell the story of British Rail from a people’s
perspective.
